MasterClass with Robbie Ryan

On Friday, January 31st at 11:00hs, as part of Working JIIFF, the festival welcomes renowned Irish cinematographer Robbie Ryan, who will present a free MasterClass aimed at cinematographers and students from Uruguay and the region. The session will be moderated by Flora Fernández Marengo (Labhouse).
Known for his inventive visual approach and remarkable versatility, Robbie Ryan has served as director of photography on films such as Bird (2024) by Andrea Arnold, Poor Things (2023), and The Favourite (2018) by Yorgos Lanthimos, all of which were programmed at JIIFF. Poor Things (2023), and The Favourite (2018) earned him Academy Award nominations. His most recent projects include Bugonia (2025), once again collaborating with Lanthimos and starring Emma Stone.
A frequent collaborator of filmmakers such as Ken Loach, Noah Baumbach, and Sally Potter, Ryan moves effortlessly from handheld camera work and experimentation to classical and realist compositions.
The MasterClass will offer an in-depth look at his career, working methodology, artistic and technical approaches, the use of equipment and new technologies, as well as reflections on the relationship between the cinematographer, the director, and the producer, and the balance between budget constraints and aesthetic ambition.
